Round trip from Lake Christlessee through the river valley Dietersbach up to Höfats, one of the most popular summits of the alps in the Allgäu

We climb the Höfats, which is situated south of Oberstdorf between the valleys Oytal and Dietersbachtal. The grassy mountain is regarded the landmark of the alps in the Allgäu and furthermore popular for its distinct alpine flora. Our way leads us through a long-drawn-out river valley and on a narrow meanderring path up to the four peaks of the Höfats, which have almost the same height and which give the mountain its characteristic look. There are two pairs of peaks, which are separated through deep wind gaps. The tour is quite demanding, due to steep grassy slopes and rock ledges, particularly since there are to little or no protection rails. The tour should be done by experienced hikers only.

Safety information

The tour is just recommended when the weather conditions are dry, because the path gets a lot more difficult when it is wet or icy. You should be sure-footed, not scared of heights and experienced hiking in high alpine terrain.

Turn-by-turn directions

From the starting point at lake Christlessee we cross the bridge over the river Trettach, after a few meters we turn left and follow a paved road until the path to Hölltobel branchesAfter we pass the ravine, the way takes us to the right on a paved road until we reach the quaint village Gerstruben. This is a good place to have your first break and stop at the restaurant Berggasthof Gerstruben. You can visit the chapel Marienkapelle as well which was built in the 17th century. At the crossing we turn left and continue walking for about 2,5 km into the valley Dietersbachtal (also called Gerstrubental), we also pass the alpine hut Gerstrubener-Alpe. We turn left again onto a path which leads for 2,5 km upwards alongside a steep mountain face of Höfats. After some climbing spots we finally reach the peak of the Höfats at a height of 2259 m. From the top we enjoy a fantastic 360 degree view of the adjacent alpine peaks. With some luck we spot alpine plants like edelweiss or gentian. After a well-deserved break we descend, crossing the peak of the Falkenberg (2003 m) and the Älpelesattel (1780 m). After about 2 km our path meets a trail which leads up from the valley Oytal. We stay on the right side and after 1,3 km we reach the alpine hut Dietersbach-Alpe where you can take a meal. From here we follow a gravel path back to Gerstruben and to the starting point at lake Christlessee.

Public transport

Public transport friendly

From Sonthofen: We take B19 into the direction Oberstdorf, at the roundabout we take the first exit. After about 1 km we turn left onto Walserstraße, then right onto Stillachstraße. We follow this street until we reach the crossing with Birgsauerstraße and continue straight on Burgstallsteig into the direction of the golf course.
